Leroy August Alwardt, 70, of Mason, died at 8:49 p. m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in Mattoon, IL.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a. m., Monday, March 17, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont with Rev. Dr. James F. Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Arborcrest Memorial Park, rural Effingham. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p. m., Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials are preferred to the Jolene Arend Giving Fund (WooHoo Sisterhood), Lutheran Care Center, or the donors' choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Leroy was born on Monday, October 4, 1943 in rural Altamont to Emil A. and Freda A. (Wenthe) Alwardt. He married Ila F. Hammer on March 15, 1970 at St. Paul (Blue Point) Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Altamont and she survives. He was engaged in farming and employed with Maupin Tile Company. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, a longtime Effingham County Fair Board member and also a member of the Milking Shorthorn Society, and a U. S. Army Veteran.
Leroy is survived by his wife, sister, Marcella Biggs and her husband Dean of Altamont, sister-in-law, Jean Alwardt of Altamont, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Leonard and Orville Alwardt.
