HSHS St. Anthony Memorial Hospital is having a free screening on Thursday, March 26 to help identify people who are having difficulties with swelling caused from lymphedema as well as other conditions.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the body tissues that causes swelling, most often in an arm or leg. It can be caused by cancer, trauma, or can even be genetic.

Early signs of lymphedema may include: · A full, tight, or achy feeling in an arm or leg.

· Swelling, which may cause be hard.

· Decreased flexibility in the limb.

· Visible skin changes, such as tautness, color or texture.

The Certified Lymphedema Therapists at St. Anthony are trained to help treat and manage lymphedema as well as other conditions that cause swelling. Treatment may include manual lymph drainage, compressive bandaging, skin care and therapeutic exercise.

A physician's order is not required for the screening and patients do not have to register with the hospital. However, screenings are being conducted by appointment only. Appointment times are available between 12:30 to 4:30 p. m. If you are experiencing swelling and would like to know how to get help, please call St. Anthony's Physical Rehab and Wellness department at (217) 347-1243 to schedule an appointment.
