EIU Choral Groups present Songs of Love concert February 9

Choral Groups to honor Herman D. Taylor at February concert

Cupid will strike the area early, with the Songs of Love concert at Eastern Illinois University’s Doudna Fine Arts Center in Charleston. The EIU Choral Ensembles will present, “Love Found, Love Lived & Love Lost” at 4 p.m., February 9 in the Dvorak Concert Hall.  The concert will also feature a special performance dedicated in memory of former music faculty member and department chair Dr. Herman D. Taylor.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the Songs of Love concert will highlight romantic songs that celebrate the majesty of love. The choral concert will feature the Concert Choir, University Mixed Chorus, and Camerata Singers. In addition, the musical performance will feature musical interludes featuring special guests Julie Park, Andrea Pope, Rebecca von Kamp, Jimyung Kim, Martha Lhamon, and Jonathan Young. The Songs of Love Concert will be conducted by Richard Robert Rossi and Juliane Sharp.

Camille Saint-Saens, Richard Strauss, Thomas Morley, John Dowland, are just a few of the composers whose works will be presented during the Sunday afternoon music extravaganza.

The Concert Choir will feature a very special performance of Maurice Durufle’s “Requiem,” presented in loving memory of Dr. Herman D. Taylor.  Dr. Taylor became part of the Eastern family in 1990 when he began serving as chair of the music department. Dr. Taylor also taught music theory and organ during his time in Charleston. Dr. Taylor was a special part of EIU’s music history, and several of the movements from the “Requiem” were last performed when Dr. Taylor was the organist for the Songs of Love concert in 2011.

Tickets for “Love Found, Love Lived, & Love Lost” are $15 for general admission, $11 for seniors (62+), and $5 for students and can be purchased online at www.doudnatix.com or at the Doudna Fine Arts Center Box Office.
