Take a virtual tour of the Land of Lincoln with ‘Looking for Lincoln’ director

History Forum meets Jan. 9 at Lincoln Presidential Library

America has dozens of national heritage areas. Only one is devoted to a single person – the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area in Illinois. On Thursday, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum offers a chance to learn more about the history and purpose of this ambitious project.

Sarah Watson, executive director of the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition and the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area, and Illinois State Historian Samuel Wheeler will take the audience on a virtual tour of the 43 counties that make up the heritage area. They’ll explain the indelible marks Lincoln left behind as a settler, a lawyer and a politician.

They’ll also discuss how a national heritage area makes it possible to coordinate education and tourism efforts across central Illinois.

This free session of the Illinois History Forum takes place at noon, Thursday, Jan. 9, in the Lincoln Presidential Library (112 N. Sixth Street, Springfield). Guests are welcome to bring their lunch.

The Lincoln National Heritage Area was established by Congress in 2008. It lies mostly in central Illinois, where Lincoln worked, traveled and lived for nearly 30 years. The not-for-profit Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition serves as the coordinating entity for the national heritage area, working with partners across the region to tell the story of Lincoln's life and times.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum uses a combination of rigorous scholarship and high-tech showmanship to immerse visitors in Lincoln’s life and times. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history.
