The Effingham County Museum is proud to announce a special exhibit, “REMEMBERING 9-11.”

There are three elements in the exhibit, one is a piece of a steel beam from the World Trade Center, another is a bill of lading for the steel, and a third is a descriptor of the exhibit. The descriptor tells the Museum visitor why the metal piece found a home in Effingham:

“AMERICA’S HIGHWAYS ARE ABLE TO CONNECT ITS PEOPLE WITH DISTANT AND DRAMATIC EVENTS WHICH ARE HUNDREDS, EVEN THOUSANDS, OF MILES AWAY.  THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 WERE NO EXCEPTION TO THAT CONNECTIVE ROLE. IN THE CASE BEFORE YOU IS A PIECE OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER METAL RESULTING FROM THE TERRIBLE EXPLOSION. THE TRUCK WHICH BROUGHT IT THIS TOWN WAS CARRYING IT TO SMYRNA, GA. BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL PIECE WAS LONGER THAN THE LEGAL LIMIT, AN EFFINGHAM WELD SHOP SHORTENED IT BY THE LENGTH YOU NOW SEE. THE COUNTY’S CITIZENS WERE CONNECTED TO ONE OF THE MOST TRAGIC EVENTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY.”

Area residents are encouraged to visit the Museum to view this piece of history which causes the country to remember that tragic day in 2001.
