Britt Odemba is a teacher who volunteered in 2013 to work as a teacher in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya. During that 2 years she worked with the local staff to reorganize the dysfunctional school. Today that school has 18 teachers and 320 students and is regarded as a model for other African schools. Britt has recently taken on the additional duty of advising a Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya project to revitalize 24 schools.

Britt will be speaking at Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway during the morning service of August 21 and again at 6:30 that evening at a community family night open to the public. On Thursday August 18, she will speak at Immanuel Lutheran church in Altamont at 7 PM; again open to the community.

Prior to volunteering as a teaching missionary, Britt had taught in elementary schools for 14 years in California. She has also completed 4 different short term mission trips which led to her 2 year assignment in Kenya. Britt however has married a Kenyan and plans to remain in Kenya as a career missionary for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. She and her husband live near her school in the Kibera slums with their baby girl. Together they mentor young boys from the slum and actively conduct Christian outreach in their adopted community.

Her presentation will cover life in the poor Kibera suburb of Nairobi, African schools, and her outreach efforts to teach children about the Kingdom of God. Britt would be happy to talk to any individuals considering mission work. She has plans to visit area schools and talk with teachers and administrators. Her presentations will be of interest to educators, fellow Christians, and anyone with an international interest.
