A small natural gas leak occurred in the central part of Effingham Thursday morning.

Effingham Fire Department Shift Commander Jim Charters said a contractor working on a water line replacement project along 3rd Street between Fayette Avenue and the CSX Railroad struck a gas line, resulting in the leak.

No evacuations were necessary and an Ameren crew arrived shortly after the incident to repair the line.
