The Effingham County Dive Team responded to a call from the EWA police at Lake Sara Saturday, July 30 at 6:20 a.m. concerning a sinking boat with leaking fuel. The Team arrived at the home of Steven McClay of Lake Sara who had found his boat sinking at his dock, with fuel leaking.
Using Haz-Mat dive suits, the divers entered the water and with assistance from Shumway Fire personnel were able to secure the boat and recover it. Divers pumped water from the boat and temporarily fixed the hoist. Divers then called upon EWA police to pull the boat to the Marina where it was taken for repair. Divers were on-scene for six hours. Shumway Fire personnel assisted in the decontamination process of the divers. Cause of the incident was related to a boat lift cable breaking, thus plunging the boat into the water. Significant repairs will be needed on the boat.
