Travel on US 45 in the south part of Effingham County was disrupted for several hours Wednesday afternoon by a vehicle crash that resulted in one person dead and another person injured. Killed in the crash was 18 year-old Chance M. Young of Flora. His brother, 16-year-old Mason Young of Flora, was injured in the crash.
The crash occurred at 11:50am one mile south of the Mason-Eberle Road. Watson Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said the southbound vehicle ran off the highway to the east by a bridge in a river bottom and landed on the bank on the south side of the river.
Kulesza said firefighters worked for 20 minutes to extricate Mason Young from the vehicle. Air Evac was on scene and airlifted the youth to Carle Hospital in Urbana where he is listed in critical condition today.
Effingham County Coroner Leigh Hammer pronounced Chance Young dead at the scene at 1:10pm.
Watson firefighters were on scene for three hours before the scene could be cleared. US 45 at the scene of the crash was reopened to traffic around 3:30pm.
Effingham City-County Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. Shumway firefighters staffed the Watson fire station while Watson crews were at the crash scene.
