Come January, things will be a little faster on Interstates 57 & 70, under a bill signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn.

Quinn approved a measure Tuesday that ups the speed limit from 65 to 70-miles-an-hour on Interstates across Illinois. The new law takes effect January 1. However, some areas of the state will be able to make adjustments to the limit based on their local needs.

Quinn said in a statement Monday said the bill brings Illinois in line with many other neighboring states who’ve raised limits.

Concered that the higher limit will lead to more accidents, the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation secretary both oppose the new limit.

Almost three dozen other states have raised limits since federal speed limits ended in 1995.
