Governor Pat Quinn has signed a bill regulating fracking in Illinois.

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process by which natural gas is extracted through the fracturing of shale rock.  The process is controversial, with opponents saying it pollutes groundwater, while proponents say the process is safe.

Supporters of the practice say Illinois has also taken the most steps to insure the process doesn't do environmental harm.

The fracking industry could be booming in Illinois within three years.  Companies have already leased up to $200 million worth of land in southern Illinois.

Proponents say the industry could mean tens of thousands of jobs for the region.
