Memorial Day Weekend Observances in the Area

There are a number of observances scheduled this weekend to mark Memorial Day for 2023.

There is a ceremony set for Saturday morning in Watson. The observance will be held at Watson Cemetery beginning at 8:30am.

There will also be an observance Saturday morning at Ewington Cemetery, located off Route 40 at the S curves west of Effingham. The ceremony will be sponsored by the Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at 10am. 

On Sunday, there will be a Memorial Day service in Teutopolis. The ceremony will begin at 1pm at St. Francis Cemetery.

On Memorial Day Monday, a series of events is planned.

Three services will be held in Effingham, at St. Anthony Cemetery at the Theodore Hoffman gravesite at 9am; at the Veterans Memorial in Oakridge Cemetery at 10:30am, and at Woodlawn Cemetery about 11am. Effingham VFW Post #1769 will serve as the host organization for the Effingham observances.

The Dieterich ceremony will be held Monday at 10am at the Veterans Memorial next to Liberty Memorial Park.

In Altamont, the observance will be held Monday beginning at 10am with a parade from Altamont Community High School west on Division Street to Main Street, then north on Main to Union Cemetery where the ceremony will take place. 

Also on Monday, a ceremony will be held at 1pm at Stewardson Cemetery with Wilbur Broughton American Legion Post #611 in charge.
