Jobless Rate for April Grows Even Smaller

The Effingham County unemployment rate for April was down to 2.7%. The rate was 2.9% one year ago. 

The statewide jobless rate for April was 3.7%, down from 4.3% one year earlier.

Total nonfarm employment in the Effingham area increased by 1,100 in April, compared to one year ago. 

Employment in April increased by 450 in Leisure and Hospitality, 375 in Government, 175 in Construction, 75 in Educational and Health Services, 50 in Other Services, 50 in Financial Activities, and 25 in Professional and Business Services. Decreases in employment were seen in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, down 75, manfacturing, down 25, and information, down 25 jobs. No change was seen in Natural Resources and in Mining.

Other area counties and their April jobless rates:

Coles--3.8%, down from 4.2% one year earlier

Cumberland--2.9%, down from 3.2%

Shelby--3.6%, down from 4% one year ago

Clay--4.7%, up from 4.4% one year earlier

Fayette--4.7%, up from 4.3%

Jasper--2.9%, down from 3.5% one year earlier.
