The Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday approved a variance in the permitted size of an accessory building.

Frederick and Bonnie Jean Rosen requested the variance for their property at 608 East Temple Avenue. The larger size will allow the construction of a hobby shop and storage of two collectible cars. Members Mark Thies and Ken Wohltman abstained from the vote, and all others present voted in favor of the variance.

The other variance request was denied.

The request was made by the property owner Barbara McMahan and The Lamar Companies for a billboard at 1001 North Keller Drive. The variance would have accommodated a 300 square feet electronic billboard, where there is a maximum 150 square foot accommodation for a billboard. The motion to deny was approved 5-1.
