Death of Local Man Appears to be Due to Natural Causes

The death of a local man appears to have been due to natural causes.

The man was 61-year-old Matthew W. Black, originally from Texas but a resident of Effingham for the past 12 years. 

Effingham City Police were contacted Monday morning by an employee at Burton-Devore Apartments in Effingham who conducted a welfare check on Black. The employee found Black unresponsive and phoned 911. Rural Med EMS and city police responded and contacted the Effingham County Coroner's Office to the scene.

County Coroner Kim Rhodes said her office contacted Black's next-of-kin in Mattoon and gathered additional medical information on Black.

Rhodes said that no foul play is suspected.
