Jobless Rates Down in Area Counties for January

Effingham County had an unemployment rate of 3.3% for January. That compared to a rate of 3.9% in January 2022.

Total nonfarm employment increased by 950 in January 2023 compared to a year ago.

Employment gains were posted in Leisure and Hospitality (+475), Government (+275), Construction (+100), Educational and Health Services (+75), Other Services (+75), Manufacturing (+50), Financial Activities (+25), and Natural Resources and Mining (+25).

Payrolls declined in Professional and Business Services (-75), and Information (-25).
 
No change was reported in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities.
 
The jobless rates for January in area counties were:
 
Coles--4.3%, down from 4.8% one year earlier
 
Cumberland--3.8%, down from 4.5%
 
Shelby--4.3%, down from 4.9%
 
Clay--5%, down from 6.1% one year earlier
 
Fayette--5.4%, just down from 5.5%
 
Jasper--4%, down from 4.9% one year earlier
 
The statewide jobless rate for January was 4.7%, down from 5.4% in January 2022.
