Upcoming Newton Power Plant Closing Leads to Grant Funding

The governor and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunities have announced more than 50 localities and municipal entities will receive Energy Transition Community Grants, an initiative under the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act that provides funding for communities that have been impacted by fossil fuel plants or coal mine closures or significant reductions. Communities in 22 areas impactded by recent or impending plant or mine closures or reductions were eligible to apply for the program.

The $40 million program includes two localities impacted by the upcoming closing of the Newton power plant. Jasper County will receive $565,615, while the City of Newton will receive $78,168.
