Effingham County Coroner Leigh Hammer Thursday said the death of a St. Elmo woman who fell from her horse was due to chest trauma. Hammer has ruled the death of 72-year-old Karel Lee Ragsdale was an accident. The ruling came after an autopsy was performed on Thursday to determine the cause of death.
Ragsdale was riding the horse Tuesday when she turned and the horse moved causing her to end up on the side of the saddle. Hammer said the horse continued to move and that caused Ragsdale to fall off the horse. She said Ragsdale sustained multiple chest injuries that led to her death.
Hammer said witnesses told her the horse did not "buck" Ragsdale off.
Ragsdale was a longtime horsewoman.
