An exchange between motorists on the interstate led to a traffic stop along US Route 40 near Funkhouser later on Thursday.

Local authorities say a trucker and the driver of another vehicle engaged in what the trucker termed "hand gestures" along I-70 Eastbound between St. Elmo and Altamont Thursday morning.

The driver of the other vehicle told police that the trucker had displayed a handgun. Later, an Effingham County sheriff's deputy spotted the rig in Effingham and heading west on Route 40.

The truck was stopped near Funkhouser about 1pm with State, County, and Effingham City units on scene. The trucker told authorities that he did not have a handgun and a search of the rig did not turn up any weapon.
