County Jobless Rate Down from One Year Earlier

Effingham County's unemployment rate for May was down to 3.2%, down from 3.4% one year earlier.

Total nonfarm employment in May increased by 1,300 compared to last year.

Employment gains were posted in Government, Construction, Leisure and Hospitality, Educational and Health Services, Manufacturing, Professional and Business Services, Other Services, and Financial Activities.

Employment declined by 25 in Information.

No change was reported in Natural Resources and Mining or in Trade, Transportation and Utilities.

As far as area activities, May jobless rates are as follows:

Coles--5%, up from 4.8% one year earlier

Cumberland--3.5%, down slightly from 3.6%

Shelby--4.4%, up from 3.6%

Clay--4.9%, the same as one year earlier

Fayette--4.6%, up from 4.4%

Jasper--3.9%, up from 3.6%

The Illinois jobless rate for May was 4.5%, down from 6.1% in May 2021.
