Fire damaged an apartment building in Hillside Apartments off West Fayette Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Effingham firefighters were called at 12:47pm to 1608 Hillside Drive. Everyone was able to leave the building unharmed.

Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said the fire began in a bathroom area on the first floor of the building. The fire spread up to the second floor through the floor joists between the first and second floors. Once there was a report of a smoke-filled room on the second floor of the building, a full still was called bringing firefighters from the Montrose, Teutopolis and Shumway fire departments. Abbott EMS and AmerenIllinois were also on scene.

Kulesza said two apartment units suffered significant damage, but bathrooms in four units were affected.

Firefighters were on scene for over an hour.
