Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said no foul play is suspected in either of two weekend deaths in the county.

Abbott EMS and Effingham city police responded to Effingham Motel on East Fayette Avenue at about 10:50am Sunday. The motel manager phoned 911 and advised that an individual failed to check out and was found unresponsive in his room. Upon arrival, authorities found a man dead in one of the motel rooms. The man was identified as John Michael Clark, 73, of Toledo, Illinois.

The Coroner's office was notified and responded to the motel. Preliminary investigation indicated there was no trauma or injury. Medical records are being requested. No drugs or alcohol were found in the room.

The death remains under investigation by the Effingham County Coroner's Office and the Effingham City Police Department.

Meanwhile, the Coroner's Office and the Effingham County Sheriff's Department are investigating the death of a man found in an apartment in Teutopolis. The Coroner's Office was notified at 8:30pm Sunday of a welfare check at the apartment after deputies found the man. Again, no foul play is suspected.

The man was 71-year-old Edward Vasquez Perez. Rhodes said the man was retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections and had been living in Teutopolis in recent years.
