2022 political candidates can begin circulating petitions for the Illinois primary election today.

Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzel, the chief election authority for the county, reminded potential candidates that while petitions can be circulated beginning Thursday, the filing period is from Monday thru Monday, March 7 thru March 14. The General Assembly voted to move the primary date back to June 28.

Primaries will be held for all nine county board seats, County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Supervisor of Assessments, and County Sheriff. The primary is also important since that is when precinct committeepersons are elected to campaign for the candidates of their party until the general election in November.

In Effingham County, for the countywide offices, 57 signatures are needed on Republican petitions and 14 signatures on Democrat petitions. County Board candidates, in all districts, need 17 signatures. Precinct committeepersons need seven signatures.
