Man Found Unresponsive at Local Apartment Later Dies

Local authorities are investigating the death of a man found unresponsive in his apartment.

Effingham city police were called to 105 W. Jefferson to conduct a welfare check on an individual at one of the apartments in that complex. Officers arrived and found the man unresponsive. He was taken to the HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital emergency room by Abbott EMS. 

The man died shortly after arriving at the hospital. He was identified as 43-year-old Jeremy Bertiaux of Effingham.

The Effingham County Coroner's Office was notified. A preliminary investigation indicated there was no trauma or injury to Bertiaux. Medical records and toxicology samples were obtained by the Coroner's Office. 

The death remains under investigation by the Effingham County Coroner's Office and the Effingham City Police Department. The Effingham Fire Department assisted at the scene of the incident.
