Jobless Rates up in March From 2012

 

Unemployment rates were higher in most area counties in March compared to 2012 rates.

Effingham County's March jobless rate of 7.9% is up from 7.1% in March 2012. 

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said poor weather conditions delayed construction activity as well as seasonal employment expansions in retail trade and leisure-hospitality.  Government payrolls continued a steady downward trend. 

Employment in health services continued to increase.  Payroll advances were reported in professional and business services, transportation, wholesale trade and financial activities.

Area counties and their rates for March were:

Cumberland County--10.8%, up from 9.4% one year earlier

Shelby County--9.6%, up from 8.9% one year earlier

Clay County--11.5%, up from 10.3% one year earlier

Fayette County--10.9%, up from 10.8% one year earlier

Jasper County--9.0%, up from 8.1% one year earlier

Employment opportunities in health care and medical support occupations continued to lead the way in early 2013.  Job opportunities were available in food services, sales, transportation, management, computer operations, engineering, production occupations and building and grounds maintenance.
