Sean McQueen has announced his retirement as Shelby County Sheriff.

The retirement is effective November 5.

In a letter to Shelby County officials, McQueen said he has been offered an opportunity that he "simply cannot turn down, as it will be life changing." He said he has to do "what is best for my family."

McQueen has only been serving as sheriff since June, when he succeeded Don Koonce, who retired. McQueen acknowledged the work that had been done to help him secure the appointment as sheriff.

McQueen has served in law enforcement for 31 years. He did not reveal in his letter the new opportunity.

The work will now begin by Shelby County officials to secure a new sheriff.
