Teutopolis School Board Discusses After School Program

Teutopolis school board members Monday discussed an after-school program that would be similar to their pre-school program.

Superintendent Matt Sturgeon said he anticipates 75 to 125 children participating in the program, which would involve some physical activity, a snack, and help with homework. The program would run from 3:45 to 5:45pm and would operate at Teutopolis Grade School. 

Sturgeon said he has been talking with the St. Francis Parish Council as to who would operate the program.

The board also accepted a bid for installation of drainage at the junior high school building, and heard that work is progressing on the painting on the basketball court at J.H. Griffin Gym of the signature of late Lady Shoes basketball coach Dennis Koester with a dedication set for November 12. Work is also continuing on a mural at the high school depicting the 1929 high school building.

Board members agreed to pursue a $50,000 matching grant from the State with the revenue going for tuckpointing work on the west facing wall of J.H Griffin Gym.

The Board also approved the hiring of Jean Schumacher as a high school secretary and Al Church as an assistant high school boys tennis coach. 

Sturgeon also reported that he will be attending the Illinois State Board of Education meeting Tuesday and will share a request that the State would cease actions that limit the local decision making process in the state's schools.
