Robert David Russell has been appointed the next Fayette County Sheriff.

The 42-year-old Russell will succeed Chris Palmer, who announced his retirement from law enforcement on August 3. Russell will succeed Palmer on October 1.

Russell was hired and appointed Chief Deputy by Sheriff Palmer on September 15. A statement from Palmer indicates Russell "is working closely with the Sheriff to insure a seamless transition into the position".

Russell's biography indicates he lives with his wife and six children just outside Ramsey, but he grew up in Pana. He worked in the Explorer's Post in Pana and served as an auxiliary officer for the Christian County Sheriff's Department for several years. He served as a fulltime Paramedic for Pana Ambulance Service for 12 years, served as a patrolman for the Village of Ramsey, and has been serving as Chief of Police in St. Elmo.
