The 2012 Illinois High School Rodeo Association State Finals are quickly approaching and Effingham County will once again serve as the headquarters.
The Altamont Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring the competition, which will take place at the county fairgrounds at Altamont Thursday-Saturday, June 14-16.
The festivities will be preceded by a Rodeo Kickoff in downtown Effingham on Wednesday, June 13. Highlights will include a barbecue cookout from 5-8pm on the lawn of the Old Courthouse downtown. The cookout is sponsored by Martin's IGA+ with proceeds contributed to the IHSRA Scholarship Fund. A cowboy shootout is planned at 6:15pm with the return of the Cowboy Gunslingers. A rodeo parade will step off at 6:30pm north of St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital along Maple Street. The parade will proceed south on Maple to Jefferson Avenue and then east on Jefferson past the Old Courthouse. This year's parade theme is "Mardi Gras" and the parade colors are yellow, gold, purple and green. Entry forms are available at the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce office on Keller Drive. The band "Road Rangers" will perform country and rock music at the Old Courthouse at 7pm.
The rodeo competitions at the fairgrounds are scheduled at 7pm Thursday, 7pm Friday, and noon and 6pm Saturday. The competitions will include bull and bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and other events. There will be Mutton Bustin at about 6:30pm Thursday and Friday where kids ages 5-7 (accompanied by a parent) can sign up at the Rodeo office between 5-6pm for a chance to ride a sheep. There will also be alumni bull rides during the Friday and Saturday night competitions where 10 former Illinois high school bull riding contestants will compete for a $500 jackpot and a weekend buckle.
Other activities will feature a golf outing to raise funds for the Rodeo Association scholarship at 7:30am Thursday, a Special Kids Rodeo at 12:30pm Thursday where kids with special needs from around the area can learn to rope and ride with the Rodeo contestants, a scholarship breakfast Saturday from 6:30 to 10am, and the Grand Entry Parade to open the Saturday night competition.
Advance tickets are $8/adult for a single performance or $25/adult for a weekend pass, while tickets at the gate will be $10/adult for a single performance or $30/adult for a weekend pass, while a child under age 12 will be admitted free if accompanying a paid adult.
