(STATE SENATOR DARREN BAILEY {FIFTH FROM LEFT} POSES WITH EFFINGHAM COUNTY SHERIFF PAUL KUHNS AND LOCAL COUNTY AND CITY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FOLLOWING DELIVERY OF CARDS AND LETTERS FROM THE PUBLIC SENT TO BAILEY'S OFFICE DURING NATIONAL POLICE WEEK)

State Senator Darren Bailey was in Effingham Monday to deliver cards prepared by district residents for members of the local law enforcement community.

The effort was an initiative of the Illinois Senate Republicans and began during National Police Week in May. Bailey stopped by the Effingham County Office Building over the noon hour to leave the cards and letters with Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns and other on-duty officers of both the sheriff's department and the Effingham City Police Department.

Bailey said the project was an effort to show law enforcement officers that "you guys are appreciated. Hang in there."

Kuhns said, "We have a vested interest in supporting our community, because we are a part of our community." He noted the animosity shown by some nationally toward police "hurts, and makes it more difficult to recruit young people for service in law enforcement."

Kuhns and Bailey both noted that those in Effingham County support their law enforcement personnel, and that police officers here know it.
