UPDATE: Five Dead After Crash on Route 40 Between St. Elmo and Brownstown

Illinois State Police released details Sunday afternoon on a two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in Fayette County, resulting in five fatalities.

The crash occurred at 3:14pm on US Route 40, east of Fayette County Road 1750 North, which is between St. Elmo and Brownstown.

Police report a westbound car driven by 50-year-old Lloyd A. Rowe of Brownstown, for unknown reasons, ran off onto the right shoulder of the highway. Police say Rowe overcorrected, causing him to lose control of the car. The vehicle skidded into the path of an eastbound car driven by 22-year-old Hailey E. Funneman of Effingham. The resulting collision caused both vehicles to skid into the south ditch where they came to rest.

Rowe, as well as Funneman and her three passengers, 25-year-old Coleton Price of Shumway, 43-year-old James W. Bowlin of Effingham, and 45-year-old Jeana M. Kollman of Effingham, were all pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. 

Route 40 in the area of the crash was closed to travel until later Saturday night.

Autopsies of both drivers will be conduted on Monday in Effingham.
