The annual Effingham County tax sale generated more than $600,000 in revenue.

The tax sale is actually the sale of unpaid taxes on parcels. After a certain period of time elapses, people are allowed to bid on those taxes and the bidder offering the highest interest rate gets to pay off the taxes. After another period of time passes, unless the property owner pays the person the amount of the taxes plus the amount of interest, the person becomes the owner of the property.

Effingham County Treasurer Paula Miller said delinquent tax on 146 parcels of property were sold, down from 191 parcels last year. The sale generated $602,499.17 for the County. The amount includes tax, penalty, pre-sale and post-sale costs. 18 tax buyers registered to participate in the tax sale.
