The Illinois Department of Employment Security Friday said the state's December jobless rate was 7.6%. That's up from 6.9% in November. Non-farm payrolls were down 2,500 jobs in December.

The 7.6% rate for December is 0.9% higher than the national jobless rate for the month of 6.7%. The national rate is unchanged from November.

Illinois saw gains in jobs in December in professional and business services; trade, transportation and utilities; and construction.

The industry sectors that reported monthly payroll declines were leisure and hospitality; information; and other services.

Compared to a year ago, nonfarm payroll employment decreased by more than 423,000 jobs.
