Longtime Illinois legislator and Republican leader Roscoe Cunningham has died.

The Lawrenceville resident died on Saturday. He was 97 years old.

Cunningham served four terms in the General Assembly, but lost a run for Congress. He was a state delegate to the Republican National Convention three times. He was also a successful attorney, businessman and community leader in Lawrence County, where he also served four terms as state's attorney.

Cunningham, who gave yardsticks to constituents during his marches in many parades through the region, practiced law for over 70 years in Lawrence County.
