The Effingham Fire Department and the Effingham City Council Tuesday recognized two groups of citizens for their volunteer service in emergency situations.

Hassan Hovis, Billie Jo Guthrie and Brandon Evans responded when fire was burning their neighbor's residence at the corner of Jefferson and Cherry. Billie Jo and Brandon were going to see Hassan and noticed the fire. They took action to attempt to put out the fire and kept it under control until firefighters reached the scene.

Also recognized at Tuesday's meeting were members of an IDOT crew that assisted at the scene of a crash on the interstate outside Effingham involving a family, again working to control the scene until emergency crews arrived.
