Fire destroyed a house near Brownstown Monday morning.

Brownstown Fire Department firefighters were called out at 5:13am to the Tyler Roe residence north and east of Brownstown. Brownstown Fire Chief Tony Thomason said the house was a total loss. Thomason said they are still checking on the cause of the fire, but it began in the kitchen area.

The family was home at the time of the fire, but family members were alerted by smoke detectors and got out safely.

Brownstown firefighters were assisted by fire companies from St. Elmo, Vandalia, St. Peter, Ramsey and Altamont, and fire units from Teutopolis and Watson staffed the Brownstown station in case of another fire while Brownstown firefighters were on scene. MABAS Air 54 and RuralMed Ambulance also assisted at the scene.

Thomason said firefighters were on scene until after 8:30am. No one was injured.
