A Charleston man has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty in Effingham County Circuit Court to residential burglary.

19-year-old Jamal Harris and a co-defendant were arrested in May for entering the home of an Effingham woman while armed. Harris and the other man, 23-year-old Kaden Dedman of Sullivan, were charged with a Class X felony count of home invasion with a firearm.

In exchange for the guilty plea to residential burglary, the home invasion charge against Harris, along with drug and battery counts, were dismissed.

Meanwhile, Dedman is being examined as to his fitness to stand trial. He is due back in court on October 30.
