Altamont city officials were joined by representatives of the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for the city's solar power plant.

The demonstration power plant began commercial operation on August 26. The ground-mounted solar panel array includes 1,674 solar panels.

The solar plant is a project of the IMEA, which supplies wholesale power to Altamont. As a demonstration site, the plant will supplement electric capacity by enough to supply approximately 100 Altamont residential electric customers.

Altamont Electric Utility and IMEA are studying how the solar plant contributes to the City's distribution system.
