Formal Charges Filed Against Schmitt

Formal charges have been filed against former Effingham resident Gary Schmitt in Sangamon County in connection with an alleged attack at McFarland Mental Health Center in Springfield.
Schmitt, who has admitted to killing his father and attacking a woman and her daughter in Effingham County, was a patient at McFarland at the time of the alleged attack on a woman this past Friday night.
The charges filed against Schmitt differ from those on which he was held after being taken into custody.
Sangamon County authorities Wednesday filed a Class 1 felony count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault, along with two counts of aggravated battery and a count of unlawful restraint.
Bond for Schmitt was set at $100,000. He is next due in court for a preliminary hearing on October 8.
Schmitt was a patient at McFarland after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing his father and seriously injuring the mother and daughter a few months later.
