The man charged with breaking into a number of vehicles on the St. Anthony High School parking lot during last Thanksgiving's basketball tournament has pleaded guilty.

(DAVID CARTER)

56-year-old David Carter of Hannibal, Missouri pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in exchange for a seven-year prison sentence. The other eight burglary counts were dismissed as part of the negotiated plea. Carter will spend three years on mandatory supervised release once out of prison. He was fined 100 dollars plus other assessments, was given credit for 201 days in jail awaiting disposition of his case, and must make $5,879.39 in restitution to those whose vehicles were burglarized. Purses, cell phones and cash were taken from the vehicles.

While a big crowd was inside the Enlow Center watching the championship game of the tournament, Carter broke into nine vehicles. A citizen witnessed suspicious activity and reported it, then kept surveillance on Carter as long as possible. Patrol officers canvassed the area around the high school and passed on information to city police detectives who worked with police elsewhere in Illinois as well as in Indiana and Missouri and the US Marshal's Service, leading to Carter's arrest.
