Two elderly Edgewood residents were critically injured in a physical altercation Monday afternoon and a man is in custody in connection with the incident.

39-year-old Mark N. Sigrist of Edgewood is in the custody of the Effingham County Sheriff's Department following a 911 complaint of an altercation at a house on Kentucky Street in Edgewood. A neighbor phoned in the complaint just before 2pm.

At the scene, Effingham County deputies and Illinois State Police troopers located Sigrist and took him into custody without incident.

An 80-year-old female was transported from the scene by Abbott Ambulance to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. She was later transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana and is receiving critical care for the injuries she sustained. Her 83-year-old husband was transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield where he is receiving critical care for his injuries. Sigrist was also treated following the incident for what were termed "very minor injuries".

Sheriff Dave Mahon said the victims are related to Sigrist and no further suspects are being sought.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department, which was also assisted by troopers assigned to the Crime Scene Services Division of the Illinois State Police.

The investigation into the matter is being referred to the Effingham County State's Attorney's Office. Formal charges are expected to be filed in Effingham County Circuit Court on Wednesday.
