Two people were airlifted for treatment after a motorcycle ran into a turning semi in Richland County.

The crash happened at 10:37am Monday on US Route 50 at Richland County Road 300 East.

State police report a motorcycle operated by 31-year-old Caleb Cochran of Clay City was following a semi driven by 35-year-old Christopher McCarthy of Rinard. McCarthy activated his turn signal and began to slow down, moving into the westbound lane in order to make a right turn. Cochran attempted to pass the semi on the right side and struck the semi in the center of the passenger side.

Both Cochran and his passenger, 41-year-old Jamie Wilkin of Clay City, were injured and airlifted from the scene with what authorities termed life threatening injuries.

Cochran was cited for improper passing, operating a vehicle without insurance, driving with an expired registration and improper use of registration.

The roadway was closed for about an hour during the crash investigation.
