January joblessness was much lower than one year earlier.

The Effingham County unemployment rate for January was 3.2%, down from 4.6%  in January 2019.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said non-farm employment in the county increased by 350 compared to last year.

Employment gains were posted in Construction, up 150; and Leisure and Hospitality, up 100. Slight increases were reported in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, and Information.

Slight decreases were reported in Educational and Health Services, Professional and Business Services and Manufacturing.

Area counties and their rates:

Cumberland--3.4%, down from 5.4%

Shelby--4.1%, down from 5.6%

Clay--4.9%, down from 6.3%

Fayette--4.7%, down from 6.7%

Jasper--4.3%, down from 6.3%.
