Sturgeon was hired at a special meeting of the Teutopolis Board of Education Tuesday night. He will begin his duties at Teutopolis on July 1. He will succeed Deb Philpot, who is working as interim superintendent at Teutopolis following Bill Fritcher's departure to become superintendent of the Neoga school district.

Sturgeon has a varied background in education. He received his bachelor's degree from Millikin University in 2006, later obtaining his Masters and Education Specialist degrees from Eastern Illinois University.

Sturgeon began his career in education as a teacher in the Neoga school district in 2006, then moved to the South Central school district  for one year. He began his administrative career at Franklin Park Middle School in Salem as assistant principal and athletic director for two years, then served as principal at Franklin Park for four years before becoming grade school principal at St. Anthony in 2016.

In addition to his work as a teacher and administrator, Sturgeon also has experience as a coach at the junior high and high school levels.

Sturgeon said he is excited about the opportunity at Teutopolis and said he would be an advocate for students in his new position. He said he recognizes the success of the Teutopolis district academically and in other areas and wants to further that success.

As to the high school renovation project underway at Teutopolis, Sturgeon thanked the administrators, board members and others who have undertaken the work, recognizing that much of the work will be close to completion prior to his arrival.

Sturgeon said the departure from St. Anthony will be bittersweet, saying that he and his family have enjoyed being a part of a special community at St. Anthony.

Also Tuesday night, the Teutopolis board accepted a letter of resignation from Alexandria Elliott as high school Agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor, effective June 30, and approved the transfer of Crystal Tipton from full-time elementary aide to full-time high school library aide, effective March 2.
