Effingham County Sheriff's Deputies report the crash happened at 10:15am on 650th Street, also known as the Dexter Road. The crash happened on the overpass over I-70, south of US Route 40. Deputies say a northbound SUV driven by 62-year-old Ronald J. Hite of Mason crossed over into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck driven by 34-year-old Chauncy Kuhns of Altamont.

Ronald Hite was killed in the collision. A passenger in the Hite vehicle, 37-year-old Bryan Hite of Altamont, was injured and was airlifted by Arch Air to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Kuhns was taken by private vehicle to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for examination, then was later transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for further treatment.

No citations were issued.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes, Arch Air, Altamont Fire Department who assisted with extrication efforts, and an Illinois State Police accident reconstruction officer were all assisted in the case. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday morning to officially determine whether a medical condition could have caused the crash.
