Additional information is available on the standoff in Altamont Saturday night that led to the arrest of 28-year-old Ryan Beccue of Altamont.

Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens Monday said the incident began at 5:30pm Saturday when Beccue arrived at the home of his ex-wife. Beccue's mother was babysitting with the children at the house. Heiens said Beccue broke in the door of the home to gain entry. Beccue's ex-wife arrived home and asked a neighbor to notify police.

Heiens said Beccue left the home and went a few blocks away to a home where his mother was living along Route 40 near Altamont Community High School. Authorities arrived on scene and eventually fired gas pellets into the home, at which time Beccue surrendered, shortly before 9pm. There were reports of people hearing shots fired, but Heiens said people might have heard the firing of the gas pellets and thought it was gunshots.

Heiens said the initial belief was that Beccue was armed, since it was thought there was a shotgun in the house where he was located. He said authorities later found out there was no gun in the home.

Altamont City Police were assisted by Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Effingham City Police Department, Illinois State Police, the ILEAS SWAT Team and the Strategic Resource Team.

Beccue is due to make his initial court appearance today.
