List of Candidates for March 2020 Primary

The filing period for the March 2020 Illinois Primary Election ended at 5pm Monday.

In Effingham County, there are no Democrat candidates for either County Board or for a countywide office.

For County Coroner, incumbent Kim Rhodes will face off against Gerry Kingery for the nomination. Rhodes narrowly defeated Kingery in 2018 to serve until the November 2020 election.

For State's Attorney, incumbent Republican Bryan Kibler is the only candidate

For Circuit Clerk, incumbent Republican John Niemerg is the only candidate.

In County Board District A, Republicans Eric Petty, Norbert Soltwedel and Gerald Kinkelaar are candidates. Incumbent Republican Lloyd Foster is not seeking re-election.

In County Board District E, Republican incumbent John Perry and Republican former board member Mike DePoister are the candidates.

In County Board District F, Republicans Elizabeth Huston and Bruce Kessler are the candidates. Incumbent Republican Jeff Simpson is not seeking re-election.

In County Board District H, incumbent Republican Rob Arnold is the sole candidate.

In County Board District I, Republican incumbent Joseph Thoele and Republican Jeremy Deters are the candidates.

Moving on to the state legislature, the 2018 candidates for 107th District State Representative will square off again in the November election; Republican incumbent Blaine Wilhour of Beecher City and Democrat challenger David Seiler of Effingham.

For 109th District State Representative, there are several hopefuls looking to succeed Republican Darren Bailey of Xenia who is running for state senate. They are Republicans Cory Musgrave of Geff, Andy Hires of Olney and Adam Niemerg of Dieterich, and Democrat John Spencer of Louisville.

In the 55th State Senate District, Darren Bailey is opposed by Jeffrey Fleming of Olney for the Republican nomination in March. There is no Democrat candidate.

In the 102nd House District, incumbent Republican Brad Halbrook of Shelbyville is unopposed.

In the 110th House District, incumbent Republican Chris Miller of Oakland is unopposed.

In the Clay County Resident Circuit Judge race, Republican Joel Powless who was appointed to the post when Robin Todd retired is unopposed.

Moving up to the Federal level, there are 10 candidates filed to succeed Republican John Shimkus in the 15th Congressional District. They are Republicans Chuck Ellington of Camargo, Kimberly Wade of Grafton, Kent Gray of Leland Grove, Mary Miller of Oakland, Darren Duncan of Rossville, and Kerry Wolff of Altamont, and Democrats Craig Morton of Salem, Kevin Gaither of Charleston, Erika Weaver of Mattoon, and John Hursey, Jr. of Collinsville. Gaither was the Democrat nominee in 2018. Shimkus is not seeking re-election.

Once the nominees are determined in the March primary, the general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3.
