Illinois State Police report the crash happened near exit 61 at Vandalia at 6:19 am Friday morning.

Police say a semi driven by Jordan Nelson, 30 of Altamont, was traveling westbound on I-70 near exit 61 when Nelson says he was forced into the median on the south side of the road by an unknown semi he was passing. Nelson's truck became stuck in the median, with the cab of the truck partially blocking the left lane of the highway. A passenger car behind another semi in the right-hand lane changed lanes to pass and struck the cab of Nelson's semi.

The driver of the car, 56-year old Steven Kelly of Pekin and a passenger, 54-year old Alesia Kelly, also of Pekin, were airlifted from the scene to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Alesia Kelly later died of her injuries.

Nelson was cited for improper lane usage.
