Clay County board members voted 8-2 this week to prohibit sales of recreational marijuana.

The vote affects all unincorporated areas of the county.

The sale of adult-use marijuana becomes legal in Illinois as of January 1 where it is allowed by local law.

The Clay board also approved its budget for the fiscal year that begins December 1. Clay County Clerk Brenda Britton said the budget is very close to last year's measure. The tax levy for the coming fiscal year was also approved.
