Sheriff's Department Handles Three Crashes Involving Injuries Monday

The Effingham County Sheriff's Department handled three crashes involving injuries Monday.

One crash happened at 9:30pm in Watson Township, on Old Watson Road, about a mile north of Watson.

Deputies report the roadway was packed with ice and snow. 27-year-old Danielle Wagner of Effingham lost control of her car. The vehicle hit the ditch and overturned. Watson firefighters had to extricate Wagner from her vehicle. Wagner was airlifted from the scene to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

No citations were issued.

Another crash happened at 2:40pm on US Route 45, just north of First Avenue in Union Township in the south part of the county. 

Deputies report a car driven by 51-year-old William Joiner of Louisville was traveling north on the highway when Joiner lost control of the vehicle. The car skidded off the highway to the right, traveled through a fence, and hit a tree.

Joiner was taken from the scene to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

No citations were issued.

The third crash occurred at 2:45pm on US Route 45, just south of Georgia Street in Watson Township.

Deputies report a car driven by 25-year-old Caelan Berggren of Effingham was northbound on Route 45 when Berggren lost control of the vehicle due to the snowy and icy roadway. The car traveled into the southbound lane and struck a car driven by 17-year-old Hope Monnet of Effingham.

Berggren was injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Berggren was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
